At a young age, I liked to draw and take art classes. While in elementary school, I sold and traded drawings, getting a little taste of my future profession. Later in high school I enjoyed mechanical and architecture drafting. I would personalize my text book jackets with my own artwork and hand lettering.
Upon completion of high school, I moved on to attend Central Piedmont Community College to take commercial advertising art classes. While in school, I worked part time hand lettering tractor trailers for Carolina Freight Carriers Corp. Hand lettering the Carolina Freight trailers lead me on a path of design, manufacturing, and installing signs upon my completion of college.
Wanting to learn this form of advertising, I went to work as an apprentice with Paul Jonas, owner/operator of The Signs Shop in Denver, NC. Mr. Jonas soon became my mentor, teaching me the artisanship of sign painting. During the six years I worked with Mr. Jonas, I learned such things as how to manipulate a lettering brush, gold leafing, stenciling, and sandlasting.
Since I started Baxter Signs in 1983, many signs have been designed, manufactured, and installed throughout North Carolina. Baxter Signs has the experience to make your business grow with a beautiful sign to do your advertising.
